Les gros patinent bien
Pierre Guillois & Olivier Martin-Salvan (France)
Theater  • From the age of 9
A virtuoso cardboard theatrical epic

In this extraordinary burlesque cabaret, Pierre Guillois and Olivier Martin-Salvan devise a new and irresistible comic form built out of incomprehensible Shakespearean English and five hundred pieces of cardboard. These hand-lettered signs, written in black marker with indications of place and setting, become the show’s only props. As if Jules Verne had been reinvented by Laurel and Hardy and Monty Python, this exuberant imaginary epic unfolds in a dazzling cascade of gags, tricks and reversals. A pure theatrical delight. A runaway hit across France since 2021, the show is finally coming to Rennes.

BIOGRAPHY

> PIERRE GUILLOIS (FR)

Originally from Rennes, Pierre Guillois trained in directing at the Conservatoire national supérieur d’art dramatique in Paris and founded his first company, Les Madeleines, in 1991. It later became Le Fils du Grand Réseau when he was appointed director of the Théâtre du Peuple in Bussang (2005–2011). An author, actor and director of dozens of productions, he has been associate artist at the Théâtre du Rond-Point (2018–2022), Le Quartz, scène nationale de Brest (2011–2014), and the dramatic centre in Colmar (2001–2004). Bigre (with Olivier Martin-Salvan) won the Molière for Best Comedy in 2017, and Les Gros patinent bien received the Molière for Best Public Theatre Production in 2022.

> OLIVIER MARTIN-SALVAN (FR)

Trained at the École Claude Mathieu (2001–2004), Olivier Martin-Salvan met Pierre Guillois at the Théâtre du Peuple in Bussang and began a long series of collaborations with him, including Bigre and Les Gros patinent bien, as well as with Valère Novarina. Alongside his work as a performer, he has also created his own shows, including Ô Carmen, Pantagruel, Religieuse à la fraise, Ubu, Andromaque, Jacqueline, Nul si découvert and Péplum médiéval. Associate artist at Le Quartz, scène nationale de Brest (2014–2017), he was patron of the 30th graduating class of the École de la Comédie de Saint-Étienne, Centre dramatique national (2018–2021), and is currently associate artist at Centquatre-Paris as well as a member of the artists’ phalanstery at the CNCA in Morlaix.

After Bigre (2017), Pierre Guillois and Olivier Martin-Salvan return with a new virtuoso burlesque cabaret built entirely around signs and cardboard as the sole scenic elements. Somewhere between mime and clowning, Laurel and Hardy and Monty Python: an incredible, wildly inventive, fast-paced and utterly joyful show.
