Moving objects and emotional robotics
For all ages
Les Tombées de la Nuit is proud to welcome back our favourite Batavian Gyro Gearloose, the great builder and designer of Radio Barkas and a historic DJ on the festival’s dancefloors. With his company Exoot, Tristan Kruithof presents a brand-new complex installation dedicated to electronics and robotics inventions. These “objects” move and interact independently in public space, wildly reminiscent of the animal kingdom with their big soft eyes, pincers and fins.

This is a nod to a world in which technology cannot be controlled and a robotic animal kingdom could come into being”, explains Tristan Kruithof when introducing Animaltroniek. Working on a transparently hybrid form of robotics, mechanics and electronics, he has created three autonomous creatures that offer a sort of 3D puzzle made of steel, wood, springs and rods. These three “cuddly” and communicative creatures approach, grasp, move around and interact with the public.  These objects obviously do not perfectly imitate reality and their interior mechanisms are clearly visible. At the scheduled time, the Animaltroniek creatures start to move. They are controlled remotely by Tristan Kruithof and start to interact with spectators, who often react emotionally, despite being fully aware that it is a machine.

What is the tipping point in movement and imagery that tips a human brain over the edge?” Tristan Kruithof asks this question by challenging our capacity for self-instruction and the speed at which we accept the world as it is. Humour, surprise and artistic and sensory quality are obviously at the heart of this new installation suitable for a whole range of spectators, but the question of the progress of artificial intelligence is left hanging somewhat eerily in the air.

BIOGRAPHY

> TRISTAN KRUITHOF / COLLECTIF EXOOT (Netherlands)

From Radio Barkas, the smallest mobile radio station in the Netherlands, to remote-controlled cars and numerous interactive objects and installations created over the years, Tristan Kruithof is a phenomenon in live performance artistic construction. He created the collective Exoot, based in Utrecht, to bring together all his brainwaves and projects. The “invention” branch has become specialised in street art festivals and artistic events. But Exoot is also specialised in unique mobile DJ acts for festivals. Its DJs are experts in uncovering rare musical gems from 1950s and 1960s records, delving back into the origins and roots of contemporary pop music, with  Hillbilly blues, Bluegrass Boogie, Hot Shakin’ Americana, Soul Stirring Exotica and more. There is also a wonderfully wacky “events” branch that can get a large-scale party started like no-one else or find the ideal background music for any event. It’s a service that has been tried and tested by Les Tombées de la Nuit for the past fifteen years.
