Bittersweet tragi-comedy in Palestine

In this extraordinary one-man show, Palestinian actor and director Ahmed Tobasi recounts his childhood in the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank, his four-year incarceration in an Israeli prison and his resilience through theatre. Written by Iraqi playwright Hassan Abdulrazzak and directed by the British Zoe Lafferty, it offers us a tragic yet burlesque plunge into the reality of life for Palestinians, a journey in bittersweet comedy that captures the complexity of the search for an identity and the affirmation of resistance, as an artist, on the stage.

Ahmed Tobasi is a writer, actor, director and educator with an accomplished career and experience of working in Palestinian and international theatres. Born in 1984 in the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank, he grew up during the two Intifadas and the invasion of the camp by Israeli troops in 2002. He was arrested at the age of 17 and imprisoned for four years in the middle of the Negev desert in southern Israel. On his release, he joined Juliano Mer-Khamis’s Freedom Theatre school in Jenin, and continued his theatrical training in Brussels, then in Oslo, at the prestigious Nordic Black Theatre, where he was granted political asylum and Norwegian nationality. He returned to Freedom Theatre in 2013, after the assassination of Juliano Mer-Khamis. He works on the Enfants & Jeunes [Children & Youth] project and takes part in numerous professional productions as an actor and director. He became Artistic Director of the theatre in 2020. In July 2023, the Israeli army once again destroyed the Jenin refugee camp.
