Choreographic and circus hand-to-hand combat
Using Bernard-Marie Koltès’ mythical and canonical play, In the Solitude of Cotton Fields (Dans la solitude des champs de coton), acrobats and dancers Jean-Baptiste André and Dimitri Jourde pursue exciting modern artistic adventures bordering on dance and circus. Performing in close proximity with the audience, their bodies take centre stage, confronting and challenging each other in precarious balance, with rare intensity.

Koltès’ play starts out as a meeting between a dealer and client. In this archetypal piece about the encounter as a search for otherness, multiplying opposing pairs (man and animal, male and female, black and white, etc.), the author explores desire, self-discovery, self-ambition and the prominence of the commercial relationship and business transaction. Choosing fragments of the play with an eye on the emblematic staging of Patrice Chéreau, Jean-Baptiste André and Dimitri Jourde use their bodies to express the spoken word and seemingly exude the text in this resolutely theatrical dramaturgical format.

Deal uses the venue as part of the staging, with the audience positioned around an 8×8 metre central square, forming a ring or arena that embraces the 360° configuration inherent to the circus ring.

With this hand-to-hand deal, circus artists Dimitri Jourde (The Dealer) and Jean-Baptiste André (The Client) take on their roles in this face-to-face encounter by using their bodies to illustrate and explore the exchange to be agreed upon, precarious balance, fair exchange and settlement. In these scenes, as if taken directly from stage experimentation sessions, in close proximity with the audience, they play out the universal story of potential encounters with others.

BIOGRAPHY

Jean-Baptiste André et Dimitri Jourde

Jean-Baptiste André and Dimitri Jourde trained at the Châlons-en-Champagne Centre National des Arts du Cirque, both sharing affinities for dance and a certain physical approach to movement. Deal is the fruit of their co-writing work and is produced by Association W, whose artistic approach is to create and develop new collaborations in each of its projects. The piece deconstructs the notion of circus to reconstruct physicality close to the choreographic sphere. Circus artist, director, dancer and founder of Association W, Jean-Baptiste André created Intérieur nuit (2004), Pleurage et scintillement (2013), Millefeuille (2014), Floe (2016), A brûle-pourpoint (2018) and received the SACD “circus arts” award in 2017. Dancer and choreographer, Dimitri Jourde, has collaborated with Kubilaï Kahn Investigations, Martin Zimmermann, Sidi Larbi Charkaoui, Jo Strømgren, and more. He has also developed his own collective works (with Cirque Désacordé) and solo projects in Poko (2001), Les Oiseaux (2002), Impromptu (2009), Xebeche (2011).
