L’Opéra de Rennes, in partnership with Les Tombées de la Nuit, presents
Big Bang 2024
(France)
Musical playground
Festival
Young audience
The Big Bang festival is back, following on from the success of the first edition, which attracted around 9,000 spectators. It will return to the Opera, Place de la Mairie and Hôtel de Ville, for a fun, festive weekend of music and discovery. Interactive sound installations, shows and brass bands will transform these spaces into places for children to play and experiment. They’ll be given lots of opportunities to discover music and sound in a relaxed, whimsical way, thanks to the inventive Belgian company Zonzo, who are the artistic directors of the festival.
The weekend’s line-up includes :

Le Manège du contrevent (The Merry-go-round of wind) • Compagnie Grandet Douglas (FR)

Combining a piano and flying carpet (on which children can sit), Le Manège du contrevent is a merry-go-round that calls the imagination, gentle dreaming and the magic of weightlessness. It’s also a game of finding balance and stability and it is fragile and hypnotic. Come and travel in the poetic bubble of the Grandet Douglas Company, to the delightful sound of this gravity-defying piano.

Saturday April 20 and Sunday April 21 • Free

Squeak Boum – Ensemble Sillages / Opéra de Rennes / Théâtre de Cornouailles (FR)

In this cabinet of absurdities, filled with Dadaist gags and harmonious gems, an adulterated soprano praises the virtues of asphalt, insults her mother and cooks up boiled tomatoes. A cheeky percussionist meets her and rattles a thousand everyday objects, making coins jingle, a case resonate and bird calls crackle. In unison, they dance a chachacha in pyjamas and Bermuda shorts. Contemporary music has never been so funny!
