Urban sound and body dance performance
This staggering sound and dance performance in public space sees Laure TERRIER’s eight dancers follow the geography of reality to create a new performance area that is both fun and contemplative, transcending all performance rules. The JEANNE SIMONE company uses gentle artistic guerrilla warfare in the city to subtly move away from the idea of “I am” to “We are” - NOUS SOMMES, creating a new time and space for sharing.

This performance by choreographer Laure TERRIER is somewhat reminiscent of WE CAN BE HEROES by Arnaud Pirault’s Groupenfonction, which was presented at the festival in 2009 and 2012. The performance is a clever game with public space and its occupants, reflecting a fundamental belief in a place of encounters, an attention to urban geography and an open, yet crafted writing style. At the heart of the city, a single row of seats opens out onto the performance area, where eight dancers and actors hidden within the urban backdrop slowly emerge to take their place in the everyday hustle and bustle through successive waves of movements, sounds and monologues. The dancers go from camouflaged to clamorous, creating a dance from nothing across different surfaces as they roll across concrete and gravel, jump over obstacles and climb over surfaces and walls to follow passers-by. Life carries on as normal, as loudspeakers carried by the dancers play out music and poetic monologues, punctuated by the words “je suis” – I am.

The choreographer and her actors and dancers are not afraid of direct contact with the public. In fact, for them, this is the very essence and raison d’être of NOUS SOMMES, which encourages people to share. This production by the JEANNE SIMONE company plays with the effects of surprise (onlookers and passers-by) and waiting (spectators), questioning the rules in order to change them around and push them to their limits. It is a fun and smooth theatrical and choreographical performance in time and space at the heart of the city that makes sharing and mixing space and bodies magically simple, natural and easy.

After her “ÉCHAUFFEMENT PUBLIC” on 25 June for Dimanche à Rennes and her surprise workshop “GIFT” the following day at the Musée de la Danse, on 9 July, choreographer Laure TERRIER will present a participatory performance for residents on the fringe of the festival performance, entitled “LA FORÊT D’ÉCOUTANTS” – a total of four successive performances in the city for one of our festival favourites!

BIOGRAPHY

Laure TERRIER / JEANNE SIMONE

Dancer and choreographer Laure TERRIER studied the arts before working with Odile Duboc, Laure Bonicel and Nathalie Pernette. In 2004, she founded the JEANNE SIMONE company to bring dance into public space using an intimate and non-front-facing approach to “return bodies to the street and to the collective experience”. She first made a name for herself by disrupting local traffic (Le goudron n’est pas meuble in 2007, Le parfum des pneus in 2010) as she worked on and experimented with intimacy and uses of public space, making non-performance areas one of the focuses of her research on the choreographical poetry of everyday life. Her approach to contemporary dance benefited from a number of encounters and training on Contact Improvisation, Instant Composition and Body-Mind Centering, as she experimented with hybrid forms and unusual performance venues with companies including Les Filles d’Aplomb, Laurent Chanel’s Révalité, Passaros, Théâtre du Zèbre and Serial Théâtre. She explains, “Choreographed moments are precise structures that leave dancers free to listen to the moment, to circumstance and to an encounter with the outside world”. Through her creations Mademoiselle (2010), Nous Sommes (2015), Une forêt d’écoutants (2015) and her children’s performances (Gommette in 2014, A l’envers à l’endroit in 2016), Laure TERRIER has gradually invented a specific body language which is both generous and versatile, and will be continued in an upcoming creation focused on walking, Sensibles Quartiers (2018).
