Created by American artist, designer and urban planner, Candy Chang, Before I Die is an urban and collaborative artistic project that encourages the public to think about their mortality and share their personal aspirations by completing the phrase “Before I die I want to…”
Drawing on the words of Michel de Montaigne that “to philosophise is to learn to die,” the Before I Die project started in New Orleans and examines the ways the walls in our cities can help us grapple with death and meaning as a community today.
In Rennes, a chalkboard will be set up on a wall close to Les Ateliers du Vent as part of their La Vilaine Frayeur event. Anyone walking by can pick up a piece of coloured chalk and share their aspirations for everyone to see, leaving a snapshot of our shared desires, fears, joys and struggles.
