For all ages

The GLAZ Festival is launching on 16 November as a new autumnal photography event. It will run until early January 2024 from Rennes to Lannion, showcasing the personal and engaged artistic photography of 30 artists from France and abroad – a chance to question and analyse the world and human behaviour.

The aim of this International Photography Festival is to inspire, present and understand today’s world through encounters with images in all their forms. More than 30 venues in Rennes and across Britanny will host this first edition, whose theme is “Emergency / Emergencies”. There will be free exhibitions, events, performances, film screenings, lectures, artistic trails and participatory workshops.

The Afghan Boxes project is a partnership between Les Tombées de la Nuit and GLAZ, offering the people of Rennes the opportunity for portrait photography. Four artists specialising in Afghan box cameras will come to various spots in Rennes on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th November to give you an instant portrait.

So what is an Afghan Box? The kamra-e-faoree or Afghan box camera is a wooden handcrafted all-in-one camera and darkroom originally created in Afghanistan. Kamra-e-faoree is a term from the Dari language and means “instant camera”. It uses an entirely manual camera and an analogue development process, using old-fashioned chemicals and photographic paper and requiring no power and no film. It provides the opportunity to enjoy a moment of human connection in town, capturing memories on paper. Although the theme of this first edition of GLAZ is “Emergency / Emergencies”, maybe one of the most urgent things to do is to take our time to enjoy life.
