Look out for the centaur

For the past thirty years, Théâtre du Centaure has been challenging the notions of dressage to invent a symbiotic creature that is part man, part horse. From theatrical adaptations (Les Bonnes, Macbeth, Otto Witte) to small site-specific performances (Flux) and travelling shows (Cargo, TransHumance), Camille, Manolo and their horses explore the possibilities of physical, semiotic and metaphorical combinations of this new part-animal and part-human actor. With Surgissements, these mythological male and female centaurs shake up public space, its uses and users, in a unique and surprising intervention outside the confines of normal performance spaces. Dressed in black, the horseman and woman invade our urban life in sudden, gentle and unlikely apparitions, in a strange ballet that tells us a story where they are one with their animal. The centaurs feel within reach… This idealistic and unexpected interval draws us into their poetic and mythological world, as everyday life is startled by the appearance of these creatures. Surgissements also questions our need to create a new balance, another place for people in their normal surroundings.
